5-years-platinum-bell-seal

Cummins Behavioral Health is proud to share that we have received Mental Health America’s Bell Seal for Workplace Mental Health at the Platinum Level for five consecutive years, from 2022 through 2026. This is almost as long as MHA has been offering this prestigious award!

The Platinum level is the highest level attainable for the Bell Seal, which recognizes employers who demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting the mental health and well-being of their employees. For Cummins, this recognition is especially meaningful because our work begins with people: the individuals and families we serve, the communities we are part of, and the team members who power our organization every day.

Every organization that applies for the Bell Seal completes a detailed review of workplace policies, benefits, culture, wellness efforts, and employee supports. Applications are scored across five categories: Workplace Culture, Benefits that Support Mental Health, Caring Beyond Compliance, Holistic Wellness at Work, and Total Score. Organizations must earn a Total Score of 92–100% to receive the Bell Seal at the Platinum level.

We believe strongly in this award because we believe that fostering a healthy workplace is essential to providing ethical, compassionate care to our communities. When employees feel respected, supported, and empowered to care for their own well-being, they are better able to bring hope, skill, and presence to the people and families they serve.

In its Q2 2026 newsletter, Mental Health America recognized Cummins alongside other organizations that have maintained Platinum recognition for 5 years or more.

5 Takeaways From 5 Years of Bell Seal Data

MHA has provided detailed scoring feedback for each year we've applied for the Bell Seal award. We thought it would be enlightening to look back on the past five years of data and discover significant trends.

Here are the top 5 takeaways we gathered from our scores.

1. Cummins has shown consistent year-over-year improvement in Total Score

Across five Bell Seal applications, Cummins’ Total Score has steadily increased:

2022: 89%
2023: 94%
2024: 94%
2025: 97%
2026: 98%

This growth reflects more than a one-time achievement. It shows an ongoing effort to listen, learn, and strengthen our workplace environment over time.

We should also note that MHA's scoring criteria was slightly more lax several years ago; although 89% would qualify us for the Gold Bell Seal in 2026, it was considered a Platinum-level score in 2022.

2. Cummins has made significant progress in Caring Beyond Compliance

The Caring Beyond Compliance category “assesses how the applicant fosters an inclusive, psychologically safe work environment that prioritizes prevention and early intervention and encourages employees to seek support when needed.”

Cummins’ score in this category remained strong at 90% from 2022 through 2024, then rose to 100% in both 2025 and 2026.

This tiered improvement speaks to one of the most important parts of a mentally healthy workplace: creating an environment where people do not need to wait until they are in crisis to ask for support. Prevention, psychological safety, inclusion, and early intervention are essential not only in behavioral health care, but also for the workplace culture of the people who provide that care.

3. Cummins has maintained excellence in Holistic Wellness at Work

Cummins earned a 100% score in Holistic Wellness at Work every year from 2022 through 2026.

This category “measures how the applicant empowers its workplace mental health champions, promotes awareness, facilitates peer connection, and offers resources that support employees’ whole health.”

For a community mental health center and certified community behavioral health clinic, whole-health support is not simply an employee benefit. It is part of our mission. Cummins recognizes that wellness includes a variety of dimensions like emotional, physical, social, occupational, and financial well-being. A workplace that encourages balance, connection, and support helps employees continue doing meaningful work in a sustainable way.

4. Cummins has demonstrated a strong commitment to Workplace Culture

Cummins’ Workplace Culture scores have remained consistently high:

2022: 94%
2023: 100%
2024: 100%
2025: 98%
2026: 100%

This category “evaluates how the applicant strategically addresses employees’ well-being, fosters supportive people managers, enforces fair personnel procedures, and promotes professional development.”

These scores reflect the value Cummins places on respect, integrity, continuous learning, and the hope of recovery. Workplace culture is shaped by daily choices: how leaders communicate, how teams support one another, how fairness is practiced, and how employees are encouraged to grow. Strong scores in this area suggest that Cummins is not only focused on what employees do, but also on how they are cared for as people.

5. Cummins has consistently matched or surpassed other Platinum-level recipients

Over the past five years, Cummins has consistently matched or surpassed the scores of other Platinum Bell Seal recipients in all categories, with only one exception: a small 1% deficit in Benefits that Support Mental Health in 2026.

This consistency is meaningful. Platinum-level organizations already represent a high standard for workplace mental health, and Cummins continues to perform strongly even within that group. This indicates that our organization is not simply meeting a minimum threshold for recognition. We are continuing to hold ourselves to a high standard among employers who are also committed to employee mental health and well-being.

What Cummins Employees Are Saying

As much as MHA's data illustrates our commitment to workplace mental health, so too do the experiences of our employees.

We asked our staff to describe some ways that our wellness policies affect their day-to-day work. Here are responses from five anonymous Cummins team members:

“While I have only been at Cummins for less than two years, I feel that the generous PTO is a supreme advantage. I also see leadership trying to improve caring for employee wellness through the Impact and Engagement committee.”

“As a leader at Cummins, I truly value leading a supportive and trauma informed workplace that staff feel safe to come to everyday. However, I could not do this without the help of my team leads who do such a WONDERFUL job in creating this space for direct care staff and always showing support as needed. The work we do is hard, so it is extremely important that we provide an environment for staff where they feel comfortable.”

“A few ways Cummins is supportive to mental health are the frequent check-ins with supervisors and the monthly wellness focus presented by upper management. These things give us the chance to take time and focus on our needs and get support for success.”

“Cummins offers a generous PTO program that empowers employees to take the time they need to support their mental health and maintain a work-life balance. Just as important, leaders actively encourage and support the use of PTO, recognizing the value of rest and time spent on activities that restore and recharge. I also have confidence that my colleagues will step in and share the workload while I’m away, making it easier to fully disconnect and return refreshed.”

“The workplace culture in my team is very supportive. Colleagues and leaders tend to remember the human side of life beyond work and allow flexibility to support the needs of the team, which then helps those we serve. I also appreciate the monthly effort by our wellness committee to encourage work-life balance in an engaging way.”

Cummins is honored to receive the Mental Health America Bell Seal for Workplace Mental Health at the Platinum Level for five consecutive years, and we are beyond grateful for the team members whose compassion, professionalism, and dedication made this recognition possible. As we look ahead, we remain committed to being a workplace where employees are supported, consumers are treated with dignity and respect, and hope of recovery guides the work we do throughout central Indiana.
