Cummins Medical Services Program

Through the coordinated efforts of staff psychiatrists, advanced practice nurses, certified medical assistants and a program director, Cummins offers pharmacotherapy (medication treatment) to all persons across the life span when indicated at all of our outpatient offices.

We take all necessary steps to provide effective and safe medication prescribing for individuals served. Our prescribing practices incorporate best practices from various medical organizations, follow federal and state prescribing guidelines, and utilize clinical trials data to provide the most effective care. Medical providers determine the necessity of medication intervention and monitor the effectiveness of medications prescribed, as well as recommend alternatives to medication intervention, such as therapy, skills training, and more.

In addition, persons served will receive health prevention screenings and education at the onset of treatment and periodically thereafter. Our staff members collaborate with all providers from other health care organizations to form a coordinated care team for individuals served. Along with the individuals treated, their parents, guardians, significant others, family members, or others directly involved in their care will be provided the support, care, and education necessary to ensure the best outcome for all.

Medication Treatments

Our Medical Services team can provide the following medication-based treatment options to individuals served:

  • Medications for a variety of mental health illnesses that occur in children, youth, and adults. All provided medications are FDA-approved or supported by medical research for optimal outcomes.
  • Medication Assisted Treatments (MAT) endorsed by SAMHSA, such as buprenorphine for opioid use disorders, naltrexone for alcohol use disorders, and a variety of medications for nicotine use disorders. Individuals in need of methadone are assisted in obtaining this medication from another provider.
  • Our staff may also assist individuals in restarting various physical health medications or in securing a primary care provider for the treatment of physical health conditions.

Interventional Medical Services

In specific cases, persons served may receive more intensive FDA-approved treatments to help with Major Depression, Anxious Depression, or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder that has not responded to typical medication treatments.

SPRAVATO® Treatment

SPRAVATO® (esketamine) is an FDA-approved, nasally administered medication that can be prescribed for adults with treatment-resistant depression or adults with major depressive disorder who have suicidal thoughts or actions. It is typically used along with an oral antidepressant and may only be prescribed after the individual has tried two or more oral antidepressants without experiencing a reduction in symptoms. Deep Brain rTMS Treatment

Deep brain rTMS (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation) is an FDA-approved intervention used to treat adults with treatment-resistant depression or treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder. The treatment utilizes electromagnetic currents to stimulate specific areas of the brain, which helps to reduce symptoms of depression or OCD. Read more about deep brain rTMS.

These treatments are essential for persons who have not had the benefit of symptom relief by traditional medication interventions. Nearly all individuals experience a positive response from these interventions. Sadly, these treatments are not available to many individuals due to financial or insurance constraints. Cummins gladly accepts donations to maintain these programs and to provide to those in need of these treatments.

Laboratory Testing Services

Our staff can collect blood samples for routine health screenings and medication monitoring at our in-office laboratory, eliminating the need for persons served to visit a separate facility. In addition, the most common blood tests can be conducted by our own providers, enabling quick sharing of results with patients and their care teams. If a more specialized blood test is required, a sample may be sent to one of our partner services for testing and analysis.

Pharmacy and Prescription Services

Through the use of e-prescribing, individuals who receive medication prescriptions may use any pharmacy of their choosing to fill their prescriptions. However, many individuals choose to fill their prescriptions with the Genoa Pharmacy located at our Avon office, which is partnered with Cummins Behavioral Health.

Genoa is a nationwide company that provides pharmacy services only in mental health treatment centers and is not an affiliate of Cummins Behavioral Health. In addition to providing in-pharmacy pickup, Genoa will ship medications by mail if requested. Mailed medications arrive in bubble packages arranged according to the prescriptions to facilitate medication consistency.
